Mon/Tues (9/10 & 9/11): Ch.30-35 & Survey Rotation: For our first block period of the week, we are focusing on the following:
- Ch.13-15 Review: In small groups, students reread and analyze a section of the novel The Handmaid’s Tale. Then, students meet in larger groups to go over the wider selection of chapters and have discussions about key passages identified in the small groups.
See lessons slideshow for sections and chapters selections by page number - Social Norm Surveys: Stoll leads the students through creating a Google Form so that they can gather initial data on their social norm research ideas. Students administer the surveys to each other, using their English class as a sample, and then analyze the data in their WWYD project groups.
See slides for short video on how to use Google Forms
- Ch. 36-40 Review: As a class, students read Chapter 40, in which Offred recounts spending the night with Nick on the same day of a traumatic experience with the Commander. We review the chapter, discuss another key moment, and answer questions.
- Essay Prompts: Stoll will explain the expectations and prompts for our first essay. Time will be taken to go over each option thoroughly, and to give students time to get started in their brainstorming process.
