Greetings Seniors! Welcome back to Da Vinci Design for your final year of high school. This last year will be a great opportunity for you to apply and expand upon all of the skills you have learned so far. In English 12 alone: you’ll alter society, discover enlightenment, find your side hustle, conspire against kings, make the front pages and fall in love. Figuratively, of course. But let's start at the beginning - it's usually a good place to start. Here's what's in store for This Week: |
Mon (8/13): PD Day - Staff Development (ie: last day of freedom)
Tues (8/14): Welcome to English 12: For our first class of the year, we will focus mainly on getting to know each other a bit, on learning about what 12th grade classroom etiquette looks like, and on finding out what you hope to get out of the coming year.
Wed/Thurs (8/15 & 8/16): Mandamus: Our second class of the year will bring into the world of Mandamus: a totalitarian environment when work, status and rights are dictated by things not in one’s control. This immersive, hour-long activity will gives students insights into what the characters of our first novel go through.

Aside from this activity, we will also be doing an editing activity that will be our first writing activity in our new journals. Students will have time to review the English 12 syllabus, and to fill out the Week One Survey for English 12.
Friday (8/17): Foundations of Gender & Modern Perspectives: For our last class before the weekend, we will begin looking at gender, which will be a major topic in our first novel of the year: The Handmaid’s Tale. We will familiarize ourselves with modern definitions on gender so that, when exploring the world of Gilead in The Handmaid’s Tale, we have a grasp on why old world gender biases and roles are not only harmful to individuals, but counterproductive for society. See notes for Friday’s lesson here:

Due Monday/Tuesday (8/20,8/21): Bring a physical copy of The Handmaid’s Tale and be ready to begin readings next week!
I'm looking forward to a great start to a new year - and what's more fun than starting with the end of society as we know it… right?
